We travel to Soweto (South West Township), a sprawling cluster of townships on the South West of Johannesburg. First, panoramic city views from the footbridge of Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital (the largest on the continent). Stop at Nelson Mandela’s humble house in Orlando West, (Mandela House Museum), containing an eclectic assortment of memorabilia, paintings and photographs of the Mandela family, and a collection of honorary doctorates bestowed on Mandela. Catch a glimpse of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s mansion in an affluent part of Orlando West – where Archbishop Tutu and the Sisulu residences are located. Visit the Hector Pieterson Memorial, in memory of those who died in the Student Uprising of June ’76.

Today we delve into South Africa’s turbulent past, with visits to Soweto and the acclaimed Apartheid Museum. First, a panoramic view of Soweto from the footbridge of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital before heading to the Mandela House Museum, formerly home to Nelson Mandela. We pass the mansion where Winne Madikizela-Mandela lived, then make our way to the Hector Pieterson Memorial in Orlando West, a haunting tribute to the 1976 Soweto Youth Uprising. After lunch, embark on a self-guided tour of the Apartheid Museum, with its exhibits detailing the rise and fall of apartheid, across a variety of media.
